The Bible is the literature of ancient people. However, these truths are spiritual, and they were often delivered through the beliefs of ancient people, many of which were scientific ideas believed by ancient people but no longer accepted. The Bible is the Christian Holy book it contains truths that Christians should apply to their lives so they become better citizens of God’s kingdom. This mythology also contains origin stories for natural phenomena, such as fire being introduced to humanity by gods like Prometheus and Maui, the rainbow being a sign for humanity after a god or gods flooded the earth, and even something as simple as the echo, which was a result of Zeus’ wife, Hera, being jealous of the nymph, Echo, and cursing her with the ability to speak only the last words spoken to her.įrom divine battles over raging seas to worldwide floods for which chosen people built a boat to survive, the ancient myths possess rich literary beauty and a glimpse into the cultures of history that have had more influence on Western civilization than many realize - or are willing to admit.
Ancient civilizations believed their stories - their mythology - were true accounts of how their god or gods created the world and all living creatures. A depiction of an ancient understanding of astronomy, which included a flat Earth, pillars that held up the earth, a solid firmament/dome that held the sun, moon, and stars, and water both above the firmament and below the earthĪncient people were kind enough to leave behind their scientific beliefs for the future world to see.
